The many varied theories of idli's origin

While it's obvious to assume that this deceptively delectable dish originated from the Deccan, gastronomical experts argue against that notion, and propose different theories on the origin of idli.
North Indian decent –
One theory claims that idli has evolved from idada, a dish brought to South India during 10th century AD. A community of silk weavers from Saurashtra settled down in Tamil Nadu introducing idli to the South. The common ingredients of dhokla and idli, rice and urad dal, shed some evidence to this proposition.
South-east Asian origins –
Celebrated food historian, K. T. Acharya, suggests that this savory and modest preparation traces its origin to Indonesia. India's trade relations and cultural exchanges with the south east are well documented in many literatures. Acharya proposes that Kedli, a similar fluffy steamed rice cake, is idli's precursor.
Another dish named Bura, a rectangular coconut milk infused rice cake, shares a surprising similarity with idli. Tying it all together, Chinese traveler Xuan Zang quotes that steaming vessels were not a part Indian culinary art until the 7th century. So, it's plausible to assume that idli is indeed our connection to the south-east Asia.
Array of flavors to please all tastes
So, what makes idli so popular is its healthy ingredient composition. A simple recipe and the versatility of flavors is something that encapsulates a dish of idli and sambar.
There are plenty of ways you can enjoy a plate of idli. Try it with sambar for a kick of heat, and satisfying pungency, or with sweet coconut chutney.
Sambar is a spicy lentil and vegetable stew with a strong tanginess from tamarinds. Generally, idli sambar is paired together, and roadside vendors more often than not offer free refills of sambar. This tasty broth is said to be invented by a Maratha royalty, Sambhaji Bhonsle.
Rasam is another soup that matches great with idli. Prepared with a variety of spices and seasonings mixed with tamarind and tomatoes, it has a distinguishable flavor. These days you can easily find rasam powder in the market, but the one made at home tastes best.
