Laddus have concrete evidence of being used in ancient times as a medicine. The basic Laddu recipe of sesame seeds, jaggery and peanuts, the present day tilka Laddu, was used as a medicine around 4BC for curing surgical patients and easy consumption.
Name: The name Laddu is derived from the Sanskrit word Lattika, meaning goddess. The name resembles the close relation of Laddus to worship offerings.
Tirupati Temple Laddus: Tirupati is home to one of the most selective group of Laddus in India. Consider it as God’s venture into cooking with a copyright on Laddus. Tirupati sells Laddus that are exclusively made in Tirupati Temple. There are 3 kinds of Laddus that the temple makes-
1. Asthanam Laddu: Weighs around 750 grams and is loaded with generous quantities of ghee, saffron and cashew. This Laddu is specially made for celebrities and VIPs.
2. Kalyanutsavan Laddu: This is a laddu that is exclusively distributed to the people taking part in special religious ceremony. Each of these cost Rs. 100.
3. Prokthan Laddu: Not as massive as the others but it is most widely distributed among the pilgrims.
Types of Laddus:
There are various kinds of Laddu recipe to choose from:
Sesame Laddus: Sesame Laddus are also called Tilka Laddu. It is basically sesame seeds rolled into a sphere using jaggery to bind and hold them together. Apart from being a treat to your taste buds due to its texture and ingredients, it is also know to be beneficial to strengthen our immune system.
Besan Laddu: Besan Laddu is perhaps the most popular Laddu in India. It is made all across the north and west of India. It is made from chickpea flour, ghee sugar and some powdered spices.
Motichur Laddus: If any form of Laddu comes close to giving competition in terms of popularity to the Besan Laddu, it is Motichur Laddu. From weddings to Diwali and any other religious programmes, Motichur Laddus have been ever-present.
